Angie To
Angela To is a Canadian painter celebrated for her vibrant and buoyant depictions of verdant flora. Her work is distinguished by fantastical color combinations and intricate repeating forms, using painting, drawing, and printmaking to explore the world. Through mark-making, pattern, and color, Angela creates a visual vocabulary that moves from chaos toward order, embracing the sensuality of paint, the layering of surfaces, and the liberation of erasure. Her paintings serve as conduits for capturing the sensation of encountering splendor.
Born in Hong Kong, Angela immigrated to Canada, studying Fine Art at Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary before earning her MFA from Ohio State University. She remained in the United States to develop her studio practice and teaching career. Angela exhibits widely across Canada and the USA, and her work is included in public and private collections such as the Chautauqua Institution and the State University of New York in Jamestown. She has received numerous travel grants to participate in international artist residencies, including at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris and the Icelandic Textile Center in Blönduós, Iceland. Angela maintains her studio in the Southern Tier of New York and serves as an Associate Professor of Art at Alfred University.
