Thomas Sinclair
Thomas Sinclair is turtle clan, and a member of Couchiching First Nation in treaty 3 territory of Northwestern Ontario. He was trained in the symbolism of woodland art by master artist Isadore Wadow until the time of Isadores death in 1984.
His Anishnaabe name, Miiskwaabiik Maadjikawis, translates to “the red metal whirlwind who sits in the western doorway.” As a traditional knowledge keeper, Thomas shares the legends of his community through artistic reinterpretations of ancient pictographs and petroglyphs scattered throughout the Ontario wilderness.
An accomplished international artist, Thomas has contributed to contemporary art fairs in Venice, Innsbruck, Brussels, Madrid, and London, and serves as co-organizer and co-curator of the Tisiget Indigenous Art Project, a platform that promotes Indigenous artists in major Canadian and international art markets.
