Grace Afonso

Born in Sudbury, Ontario, Grace Afonso is a Canadian artist whose life and practice have been shaped by both small-town living and time spent abroad, including several years in Portugal. Her early exposure to art began at a specialty arts high school, where she explored a wide range of mediums and developed a lasting passion for painting.

Grace continued her formal training at the Dundas Valley School of Art, OCAD University, and the Haliburton School of Art + Design, and has completed artist residencies in Umbria, Italy, and Céret, France. These experiences inform a body of work rooted in observation, memory, and everyday lived spaces.

The subject matter of Graces’s work is the celebration of color shown in the exploration of the domestic scene and landscape. It is colour’s power to affect mood that works as the driving principle behind Grace’s translation of her life to the canvas.  She is drawn to representing the home where people gather, and the indoor and outdoor spaces they live in.
