Tanya Kirouac
Abstract landscapes emerge from lingering memories. Impressions of places experienced or imagined. I paint with hot wax or oil mixed with cold wax, applying rich colour over and over, layer on layer. Intuitively deciding when to begin removing what has just been applied. Moving over the surface and carefully carving away small amounts of medium at a time, the images reveal themselves. The challenge is not always knowing what will happen or what will be found. The process creates a curious texture. Each piece revealing only some of the secrets hidden beneath complex surfaces.
Shifting from a career in art direction, graphic design & teaching design in college resulted in the life as a full time artist. Paintings can be found in private collections worldwide, and in numerous corporate collections and have been featured on HGTV design shows, as well as, in interior design magazines and artisan publications. Today I am likeliest to be found dripping wax, blobs of oil paint, or the scrapings of either medium all over the floor of the studio. Spending a lot of time on the road and touring art fairs has led to much inspiration. These travels have generated new visions and created the moments in my personal archives that I am compelled to share.
