Sarah Hillock
Sarah Hillock is a Toronto based impressionistic realist painter who combines portraiture with abstract colour field backgrounds.
Her inspiration derives from her personal connection with nature and her strong values surrounding preserving and protecting the wild creatures with whom we share this remarkable planet.
Hillock’s special technique of using oil paint on plastic polymer sheets is an exacting and precise art. Working wet into wet Sarah must complete the painting before the oil dries. The depth of the paint only allows a 10–16-hour window where the paint is still workable. To prepare she plans out the painting in charcoal and ink before attempting the final piece. Her process is fast and loose and produces a composition that combines the elements of precision, planning, energy, and movement.
Hillock graduated with honors from the Arts York Programme at Unionville High School with a major in Visual Arts. She went on to study Drawing and Painting at OCAD, winning the Libby Steinbeck Altwerger Award for Excellence in Figurative Studies. Hillock was granted a coveted space at Loop Gallery in the class of 04 Final Year Show. She was awarded an artist residence in Pouch Cove Newfoundland and later received an Arts Grant from the City of St. John’s. In 2006 Sarah had her first sold out show in Nathan Philips square at the Toronto Outdoor Arts Exhibition. Sarah has been acquired by the Rooms Museum of Art in St. John’s, The City of St. John’s Private Collection and The National Museum of Wildlife Art in Wyoming USA. Hillock is represented by Galleries in Newfoundland, Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and Internationally.
