Dana Cowie
Dana Cowie uses an impasto technique in which paint is applied thickly, using a palette knife. Her abstracted landscapes and figurative works emerge as layers of colour overlapping in textural, expressionist marks. She uses classical oil colour mixtures and paints primarily upon her grandmother’s vintage 1940s easel.
Born in 1975, Dana grew up in Hamilton, Ontario before enrolling in the visual arts program at Central Technical School in Toronto in the 1990s. She lived in Toronto, Japan and Victoria, B.C. before settling in Collingwood, Ontario where she lives with her two daughters. The surrounding natural landscapes, as well as scenes from her travels, are the main inspiration for her work.
Dana’s work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows across Canada, in the U.S. and England. She is represented by art galleries in Canada, the U.S., England, and her work is found in collections worldwide.
