Gina Sarro

The contemporary landscape paintings of Canadian painter Gina Sarro show a willingness to obscure her original visual inspiration, reducing, simplifying and even erasing elements of the landscape towards their essence. In her most recent work, desaturated landscapes are created with an immediacy, and a strong juxtaposition. Abstracted marks of color come together to create a serene, reminiscent composition which may be suddenly interrupted by defined saturated lines of color cutting vertically through it. This unexpected bisection of the simplified landscape entices the viewer to look a little closer, searching to understand their meaning and what Sarro is trying to say with her paint; a moment of pause and reflection.

Sarro’s vast acrylic landscapes on both canvas and wood panel, show her proficiency working with both acrylic and oil. Homes in Saskatchewan, where she was born, and the Alberta foothills, where she completed an Economics degree at the University of Calgary, and studied painting at Alberta College of Art and Design, also influence her work. Since leaving her career in project management, Gina attended the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, where she currently resides. Self-promoting her work for 10 years, her paintings can now be seen in galleries in Vancouver, California and now at Canvas Gallery in Toronto.
